Friday, Feb. 20th, 7 PM: S.M.S. Listening Party

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

S.M.S. was a series of portfolios featuring original artists’ work in multiple form published in the late 1960’s.  Editor William Copley gave artists free range to submit materials in a variety of forms and did an amazing job reproducing items.  While many were works on paper, some took unusual twists such as Roy Lichtenstein’s folded paper hat and Bruce Conner’s stack of ‘legal tender’.  Some explored other materials such as Arman’s set of materials to assemble a piece consisting of paint tube encased in Plexiglass vice or Lil Picard’s contribution of a hand burned bow tie.  Among all these were to be found several pieces that used sound.  Pieces by Marcel DuchampBernar Venet and Diane Wakowski used phonograph records, while those by Bruce Nauman, La Monte Young and Terry Riley used magnetic tape.  In collaboration with Davidson Galleries in Pioneer Square and Resolution Audio, we will be playing back the entire selection of audio works from the S.M.S. series.  Emily Pothast, Davidson Galleries’ director of antique prints, will be presenting the works.  As the La Monte Young and Terry Riley works are each an hour long, the whole event will be approximately 3 hours long.

Thursday, Feb. 5th, 7 PM: Dave Nuss “Wood on “Wood” DVD Screening

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

David C. Nuss comes from Corpus Christi, Texas where he started his musical career with thrash metal band Angkot Wat, and has since come to greater fame as a member of New York City’s No-Neck Blues Band.  A highly creative and enthusiastic musician, he has also played in the groups Tenor Rising Drums Expanding (with free jazz players Sabir Mateen and Daniel Carter), Angelblood, Eastenburia (with members of Boredoms), Christian Family Underground (with Family Underground), Amolvacy (with Aaron Moore of Volcano The Bear), Gazheart, Under Satan’s Sun and Way of the Cross (with members of Kemialliset Ystavat, Kuupuu, Embryo, Uton, Keijo, and Skaters), and The Boredoms’ 77 Boa Drum, plus help orchestrate the come back of Yahowa 13.  On September 29, 2006 he played solo - a man in a gymnasium with only a drum kit.  Dedicated to Keiji Haino, Mick Barr and Frost, the performance is as much a test of endurance as it is a display of creative playing.  In this video, the camera constantly circles him on a track for the full hour of the performance - constantly changing the perspective while remaining focused on the lone musician.
