Unrock Instore Gig Series

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Unrock is an alternative record store in Krefeld, Germany.  Like us they put on some in store shows, and to document this the label Unsound Recordings was founded.  Normally this releases are only available directly from Unrock, but we got a few copies of the most recent batch for Dissonant Plane.  We are probably the only place in the States that has these.  The three titles we got are limited edition CDRs in lovely screen printed Digipaks.  The first is by ME & EE with the Golden Road.  Six tracks of psychedelic blues where Matt and Erika are joined by Doc Dunn and Samara Lubelski.  Matt Valentine often reminds me of a very laid back Neil Young.  Ramping up from this is Sunburned Hand of the Man whose disc is one 39 minute Krautrock inspired jam of craziness with a quartet line up.  Both this and the MV & EE are hand numbered editions of only 150 copies.  The third title in the batch is by Temple of Bon Matin and comes in a tinier edition of only 50 copies.  And it is the most out there of the batch.  Usually a very large group, the Temple was only a trio at this gig.  Made of Ed Wilcox (vocals), Eric Baylies (bass) and Jay Reeve (electronics), they let loose some crazy free music which bears a passing resemblance to rock, but goes further out and doesn’t have any drums to fall back on.

Sokai Stilhed

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Going through some recent emails about shows that happened in town while I was in Indonesia, I discovered Sokai Stilhed.  That’s the childhood nickname of Heather Cullen and the moniker she performs and records under.  Her songs are delicate and soulful with a wonderful mysterious lo-fi production that layers her voice with acoustic instruments and sounds.  So I dropped her a line and asked if she would like to bring some of her discs here to sell.  She came by today and they look even cooler in person than on the web.  These lovely sounds are wrapped in envelopes with handmade covers.  The first untitled disc has a section of an old carpet invoice and a little envelope pasted to the cover.  Inside the little envelope is a little folded sheet of paper with the titles typewritten out.  On top of this, the bigger envelope which makes up the sleeve has a button and thread to tie closed the opening.  It is a little personal message reaffirming the private nature of the music inside.  The second disc is similarly wrapped, except that both envelopes are closed with sealing wax embossed with a fish design (this one can be found in the case as we don’t want to break the seals).  They are both really lovely items and we only sell them for $7.00.  Check out the above link for some sounds on her myspace page.  I also found an excellent article that Dave Segal wrote about her in The Stranger.  As you can read, she’s just played a number of gigs, but has a few more coming up including a night at The Josephine on July 16th with Hemmingway and The Shining Ones, which should be an interesting contrast. - Eric

Midday Veil

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Midday Veil played a good show Saturday night at Josephine.  Headlining a Portable Shrines evening they ranged from delicate songs to full on psychedelic bliss out with great synth drones and guitar solos.  Midday Veil are now a five piece, but started out as the duo of Emily Pothast and David Golighty.  The just released “End of Time” CDR consists of home recordings of the duo line up.  While not as filled out as the quintet, the duo is more delicate and spacious.  A couple songs are both on this disc and their set Saturday night, and I can’t say that one version is better than each other as they seem to compliment each other.  The disc starts out with Emily’s vocals and guitar giving this an acid folk feel, while David comes in with analog synthesizer taking the music in further psychedelic directions.  Sort of a prelude to larger group recordings to made in the fall, “End of Time” has been released in a limited and numbered edition of 50 copies with handmade covers.   We sell them for $7.00.
